Whe was the last pirate attack on any of the Maldives islands? Is it still safe to go in light of recent events in Kenya?
has there ever been pirate attacks in the Maldives? Maybe way back in history.........
Kenya and the Maldives are absolutely miles apart....it really doesn't even need to be considered!
And I'm off to Kenya in March.....certainly safer than walking through most inner cities at night.
.... might bring the prices down a bit though !!! (joke)
What me going to Kenya BB or a pirate ship in the Maldives ;-)
Kimmie - The issue in Kenya was with Somali Pirates. Somalia is on the border with Kenya.
The Maldives are nearly 2000 miles from Somalia, so there is no issue there.Edited: 20 September 2011, 21:53
Mind you... Johnny Depp was in the Maldives last week so maybe he was on a recce!!
Kimmie, please don't worry. The Maldives is a very safe destination.
Your main safety hazards would be sunburn, extreme relaxation and the pernicious Maldives addiction. Once you've been once you'll want to go back.
The question is not as ridiculous as you might think Janjans. There have been two attacks by Somali Pirates as far east as Trivandrum this year and a suspect boat full of Somalians has been picked up in Maldivian water by the MNDF.
It might seem crazy but as the Gulf of Aden is now so heavily policed by the likes of the US and British Navy the pirates are spreading their wings into the Indian Ocean by journeying between 'Mother-Ships' so they can carry out their journeys in stages.
However, the risk is still tiny and they are more likely to be after commercial vessels which they can take back to Somalia - these are worth much more to them.
Read about it here:
um.... i am willing to take my chances... ARRGGHHH !
Many thanks for all your responses - I do feel a lot safer than I did yesterday and hopefully will be able to relax when I arrive in just over 2 weeks.
