How to book a ticket on the Rocket

Hi

it seems to me that a trip on the Rocket is one of those must do things.

Have done a lot of web searching including on this site and it appears that there are some conflicting stories about the need to book (most say it almost always booked out) and where it goes to from Dhaka.

I also found a post saying that prices went up by 40% earlier this year.

As this is a much asked question perhaps a sticky would be justified with all the latest info on this incredible journey.

Thanks and looking forward to info and comment on the Rocket

cheers

@El_Dorado_Traveller

I have been on the Rocket trip 4 times on a return voyage.

A few more things about the service is that the Rocket is not 1 vessel but 3/4 vessels. The best vessel we have been told is the one named Ostrich. The vessels itself arent mordern however the engines are. The journey kind of takes you back in time to what it would have been like travelling in a different era. It is one of the best and relaxed ways to see Bangladesh's true beauty.

Everytime we have travelled (but this was like many years back) you could buy a ticket at the terminal. First class was hardly everbooked. Its the 2nd class that gets full quickly.

To keep British traditions there is a "butler", you can order English Roast Dinner (consisting of chicken and pudding), and also Fish and Chips. Make sure you ask for the smoked Hilsha as it is something unique. My other favouriate was the khichuri rice and beef curry.

The best cabins are the ones in the middle. Take your own towels, toilet rolls and books. I would also give a small baksheesh and ask the butler to clean the toilets everytime you use it as they are as old as the ship. If possible request the captain to let you get views from the top. Best way is to invite him for a meal with you.

Have a great journey!!!!

wow..this is starting to sound very special.

I looked up the destinations on Google maps. Is there a way across to Chittagong or is it back to Dhaka for that part.

On one blog it was mentioned that Michael Palin took the rocket (the original thinking man's tour guide)

cheers and thanks

Yes Michael Palin did this voyage. You can find it the video on the net. It gives you glimpses of the voyage.

We used to do the return voyage. 3 days in total.

The journey used to start in Dhaka at mid day. The vessel reaches Khulna by 8-9 pm and then for the return it started at around 2.00 am .

Many adventure bound foreigners would stop off at Mongla to start their joruney for the Sunderbans.

For many the 3 days on the vessel becomes quite boring as there isnt any entertainment on board.

On your return leg if you dont want to go back to Dhaka, look for the topic called "Khulna - Sunderbans - Chittagong" on lonely planet which might answer your question.
