Sapa from Hanoi and Hanoi to Halong bay - luggage

Hi, I'm planning a trip to Vietnam in April next year and part of my trip will include the overnight train from Hanoi to Sapa (return) and Hanoi to Halong Bay (overnight on junk boat). I can't imagine taking a big suitcase on the overnight train or on the overnight junk boat at Halong Bay. I also need to get from Hanoi to Hoi an by plane so quite a lot of travelling around. How do people go about dragging their luggage from place to place?

My trip will pretty much be as follows:

3 nights Hanoi

1 night overnight train to Sapa

2 nights Sapa

1 night overnight train to Hanoi

1 night Halong Bay

4 nights Hoi an

Also once in Sapa, is it easy to hire a motorbike and see the sights without a guide? We would like to visit some local tribes, cycle and trek the countryside.

Rather than suitcase take a backpack and use packing cubes. Check Amazon for Travel backpacks, I have had a 65 litre bag for over ten years but I’ve invested in a 70 litre bag now. Just pack clothes for one week and use laundry service near by (not your hotel as rates are normally more expensive than on the street). I also take some clothes wash for small items like underwear and bikinis. Don’t take expensive clothing and don’t over pack!

The hotel in Hanoi will store your luggage while you're on your trip to Sapa and Ha Long, providing that you book with them for a night after the trip.

We took a Ha Long cruise, came back to Hanoi just to freshen up before the night train to Sapa. We just exchange some clothing with the hotel keeping everything else we don't need in Sapa.

First suggestion is to think about the full days you'd like to spend in each place rather than nights in bed. 1 night = 2 consecutive travel days. 2 nights = only 1 full day.

Travel in SEAsia is very slow and time-consuming. Don't underestimate that.

Sapa? If you go to the church in the centre of town, there are many Hmong ladies who can take you on a trek. Some offer a genuine overnight homestay in their village. Average fee is around US$25.

Important point to bear in mind is that all the money goes to the family. Not to a tour agent.

Backpacks? Yes, you can get them from Amazon, but I'd recommend going to a specialist 'outdoors' shop. What's important is that the straps are adjusted correctly to suit your size to make carrying as comfortable as possible.

Thanks everyone for your helpful comments! We will definitely go to the church in Sapa and will take your advice regarding the Hmong ladies. Slow travel time in SE noted.

It is easy to rent a motorbike in Sapa. Price is around 80.000- 150.000đ/day. I recommend this option if you have good driving skill. Because the road condition in Sapa is bad. I had spent a night in Y Linh Ho village, the view is great to terraced rice hill.
