Elephant sanctuary

Any recommendations for visiting a sanctuary, I can only find an old post and wondered if there was such a place to spend a day or two, I would love to watch and maybe interact with elephants obviously no riding!

Hi Sally

There isn’t anything in Vietnam I’m aware of that would be considered as an elephant sanctuary. Thailand has plenty, tho there will be mixed opinion on how ethical they are. Elephant tourism in any form will raise eyebrows on this forum due to the cruelty inflicted to get the elephants to behave in a way that enables tourists to interact with them and that is excluding any riding. Even rescue sanctuaries are considered to be questionable by many.

Vietnam has loads to offer as a destination but animal sanctuaries are not high on the list. If animal welfare is important to you, Vietnam might not be for you.

If you can make your way to Cambodia - these two places are highly rated.

Oh thanks that's really interesting, I assumed these were ethical, perhaps rather silly of me! I will have a rethink, I don't want to spend time anywhere unethical!

Yes, I agree with Tofugirl - Mondulkiri province in eastern Cambodia has several elephant sanctuaries and elephant projects. Two of the best known are Elephant Valley Project (EVP) and Mondulkiri Project but there are others including Mondulkiri Elephant and Wildlife Sanctuary and Bunong Elephant Project. They vary widely on interaction with elephants with some allowing you to feed, touch and wash the elephants in a river while other projects don't allow visitors to touch the elephants at all. Some projects have multi day programs. Check out the Mondulkiri page on TA and read the reviews and check the individual websites of each project for prices and program overviews.

Mondulkiri also has beautiful waterfalls, mountains, jungles and other wildlife viewing options as well as many indigenous villages you can visit if you are interested. It is located in the northeast of Cambodia along the Vietnam border and us much cooler than the rest of the country. It is a pleasant place to spend a few days
