When I was there last November I spent a couple of days wandering around all parts of the city and encountered no major issues. You may be approached by someone offering guide services or merchandise but a firm "no thank you" resolves the issue.

Hi OC1

I gave walked to Swayambunath many times, as well as eslewhere around KTM and the valley and have always fetl safe. Thamel is perhaps frustrating sometimes because of the touts mentioned above but otherwise OK too. I doubt you will have any issues, the streets always seem to be busy with good folk which keeps the bads ones away.
