I have recently returned from a spell in India. This year, I entrusted hotel bookings to Agoda. I booked and paid by credit card for the accommodation some weeks before travelling and received Agoda hotel vouchers stating that I had confirmed bookings in the hotels of my choice
On two occasions, I arrived at my hotel, complete with Agoda voucher and all necessary documentation, to be told that the hotel had no record of me and that there was no booking.
On one of these occasions was particularly embarrassing, as the hotel had asked me to go straight to the restaurant for dinner, before processing my arrival. I was called out of the restaurant and asked to pay for the room (again). Luckily, I had ample cash and immediately queried the Agoda transaction with my credit card company. To date, I have received 1 refund and the other is pending.
When I finally managed to contact Agoda, they were unhelpful to the point of rudeness. I had a real struggle to even get them to accept what had happened. I am still waiting for an expression of regret, let alone an apology.
Interestingly, one of the hotels told me that there is a common scam in India, which involves agents taking bookings from consolidators and then 'forgetting' to pass on the funds and booking details to the chosen hotel.
Given the labyrinthine nature of Indian business, I can well believe that some hotels do use agents, but my contract was with Agoda and I maintain that it their responsibility if an hotel fails to honour their vouchers.
Agoda have so far not commented on this aspect of my complaint, but given their apalling customer service and a disinterested response. I shall certainly not use this company again.
