Bicycle touring N1 and N6 - road conditions? Accommodations?

I'm trying to plan a month-long bicycle tour this July/August and am researching different routes. I was wondering if bicycling from Maputo north to Inchope on N1, and then north to Tete on N6 is feasible? I'm traveling with my boyfriend and while we've toured all over SEA and southern India before and have been quite adventurous, we are not camping on this trip and I'm not sure if that limits us to the point where we have to rule out this route. Does anyone know if there are accommodations and services along these highways? They would need to be no more than 100km apart (unfortunately my partner's knees aren't so great and this is the most we can do in one day). We are open to supplementing the trip with short bus rides or hitches if we must. But generally we would like to cycle the entire way.

I'd appreciate any advice on this! I've been reading through what seems like hundreds of blogs and postings but still having a hard time getting recent information. I suppose I have two other questions, too, although they are dependent on whether this route is even possible... do these highways have pleasant scenery? Anyone have any advice on how to get back down to Maputo from Tete or wherever it is we end up in a reasonable amount of time (not on our bikes)?!

Hi. The route is definitely possible, and there are accommodation options but they can be quite decrepit. Essentially every mid-sized village has a "Pensao" or "Residencial". Problem is they are not even in phone books or any guide book so you would have to leave each morning asking which town has the next available pensao.

Bussing back to Maputo from Tete is about a $100 bus ride, or a $300 flight.

Hi Ozzie,

Thanks for replying to my post. I'm starting to get the impression that N1 from Maputo north to Vilankulos or Inhassoro has a variety of basic to not-so-basic services and accommodations, but then after that it gets a little desolate. Does that sound about right? If so then we have to plan somewhere else to tour after this, since we will still have 1-2 weeks left in our trip.

Definitely between Chimoio and Tete there are fewer towns. But small district capitals like Catandica and others all have small pensoes. Going the other way, up via Gorongosa onto Caia has few towns along this route. You could awlways go to Beira, then at Beira catch a bus to Quelimane, and then continue rtiding from Quelimane to Ilha de Moçambique
