Liberia calling

My girlfriend and I are hoping to travel from Morocco to Ghana, starting in September. Hopefully all on local transport through Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea Bassau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana, we are both UK citizens, collecting visas as we go from the neighbouring country...teaching if possible along the way (maths and english) I would like to know if this is possible from Guinea through to Ghana. In otherwords land travel on local transport..in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cote d'Ivoire. Is it safe? Possible? has anyone else done it recently? What kind of obstacles did they come up against. Otherwise I guess we would have to go through Mali and Burkina Faso ? Has anyone taken this route ? Thank you for your time Stu

Hi

Sierra Leone is very safe for public transport use. The road from S.L. to Monrovia is safe and in reasonable conditon. Travel during daylight only.

Freetown to Monrovia about a days travel. I am in Liberia for the forseable future if I can help anymore.

Hi Terry

My daughter will be heading to Robertsport, Liberia to work with the Strongheart Foundation, teaching and aiding children and families. Do you know of the area and the foundation ( supporting a school there I believe)?

How safe is it for a 27 year old, pretty red head? We have heard stories that have us quite concerned for her well being.

Does she need to be met at the airport and guided to the town?

Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Steve

Hi Steve

I have been to Robertsport once for a few hours visit, It seems a nice laid back place. It has a pretty beach and lagoon area with a couple of tourist camps.

She will probably be one of the only white people there.

As for safety she should take all possible precautions. E.G. Do not go out alone at night. Do not go to strangers houses etc. I will try and find out about the Strongheart foundation. I have a friend who visits Robertsport every few weeks. If they are any good they will supply a reliable escort and info for her!

As for the airport, it is about 50 mins to Monrovia then another 2.5 hours to Robertsport. If the foundation does not supply transport let me know. I may be able to help.

Regards Terry

Terry, thanks a lot for your response.

Are you located in Liberia? I notice your email address refers to orphange support. That is honourable work.

Any info you might be able to learn of Strongheart would be much appreciated. We are persuing more detail on arrival and pickup arrangements and might take you up on your suggestion of assistance, if need be.

This contact aspect of Trip Advisor has been just great and very helpful before.

Take care and fell free to send me anything you can on aspects of life and travel in Liberia. Much appreciated.

Hello Steve

Yes I am located in a suburb of Monrovia.

Went to Robertsport last week. I met a German Guy whos lived there for 1 year. He knows the Strongheart fondation and says they are doing a good job there. I may be there again in the next few weeks. E-Mail me their contact number if poss and I will make a point of visiting them.

Short of time today but will try and post general Liberia info another day.

Hi Terry, thanks for your response.

My daughter is in Roberstsport now and we have spoken with her both on email and on the phone. Everything seems to be working out fine for her. She is busy with the refurbishment of an old motel into the Strongheart House/ School.

If and when you get to the town, she is a flaming redhead, rather good looking and it sounds like she will have a swarm of little boys around her most of the day. Say hello if you see her.

Thanks again for your contact with me on Liberia.

Steve
