Self Driving Fes to Marrakech Itinerary (Southeastern)

It's our first time to morocco and be going end of June for 6 days and need some advice, mostly regarding traveling by car southeastern. We are thinking to spend 2 full days in Fes, then rent a car and get to Dades / Todra Gorge region via Ouarzazate. We would like to do some hikking, maybe for one day in the gorge and stay one night in some village off the beaten path. Then stay overnight in some oasis and do a one-day camel trek. Finally go straight to Marrakech and spend two days there. So we have 6 days from the moment we leave Fes, to the moment we reach Marrakech or something similar

Has anyone done something similar? How is driving in morocco outside the major cities? Do we need a jeep or a normal little car is ok? Most importantly, is it possible to cover all these distances in 6 days by rented car? We don't want to spend all our time driving. Is it safe to drive at night to gain some time?

Thanks

Has anyone done something similar? .... Many people do this.

How is driving in morocco outside the major cities? .... Extremely easy to navigate, don't drive fast

Do we need a jeep or a normal little car is ok? ..... Normal car is fine

Most importantly, is it possible to cover all these distances in 6 days by rented car? ..... 6 days would be just fine.

Is it safe to drive at night to gain some time? .... Absolutely NOT

A small correction of your possible itinerary - from Fez you go to Ouarzazate through or past Dades / Todra Gorge region. Not opposite.

I'd do the following:

After Fez, drive to Merzouga and overnight in the desert (Erg Chebbi)..about 7 hrs drive

The following day, drive to either Todra or Boulmane du Dades Gorge, about 5 hrs drive or so, and overnight. I'm more partial to the Boulmane. The villages of Kelaa M'Gouna and Skoura are also great, so you could easily spend a few nights in that area.

Onward to Ouarzazate/Ait Benhaddou..I'd probably opt for staying at Ait Benhaddou and therefore being close to the Kasbah which is worth seeing.

Over the Tizi-n-Tichka pass to Marrakech (about 4 hrs). Taddart (the first one you come to, not the second) makes a great little lunch stop.

Easily done in a normal vehicle, but as already said here, avoid driving after dark..

Woops, I missed the mention of Fez to the gorges via Ouarzazate.

It's best to stop in the Todra Gorge rather than Tinerhir, similarly in the Dades Gorge rather than in Boumalne. Auberge le Festival is about 5km north of the narrow section of the Todra Gorge, see http://www.aubergelefestival-todragorge.com/ and morocco-knowledgebase.net/forum/…

Kasbah de la Vallée is about 25km up the Dades Gorge just before the hairpin section, see www.kasbah-vallee-dades.com/lgen/default.htm and morocco-knowledgebase.net/forum/…

Kasbah Itran is situated about 8km north of the main road running through El Kelaa M'gouna (there's only one major road junction to the right in El Kelaa, take that one running though an area of shops and keep going). See kasbahitran.com/kasbah_en/…kasbah_en.html and morocco-knowledgebase.net/forum/…
