Driving from Tangier to Tetouan to Chefchaoun to Fez

Considering renting a car from Tangier and driving to Tetouan then Chefchaun then to Fez.How are the road conditions? Will be there mid Feburay.I heard roads around mountains are narrow and it may be difficult around the raining season. Are trains a better option than driving to Fez? Are there major highways connecting Tetouan Chefchaoun to Tangier and Fez?

Thanks in advance.

Between Tetouan and Fes you'd be traveling on mountain roads. These are not highways, most of the road is one lane in each direction, with no emergency lane.

It's easy enough to drive if you are a confident and careful driver.

Trains, of course, are a breeze. But you can't get to Tetouan or Chefchaouen by train.

-How are the road conditions?

Road conditions in the north around the Rif are average at best, and along with the possibility of rain in Feb, you won't be averaging more than 60 to 70 km per hour. The roads are one lane in either direction, and many parts, especially from Tetuan to Fes, have uneven paving and occassional potholes. Beautiful drive, though.

-Are trains a better option than driving to Fez?

Of course, you'll be a little limited in terms of being able to go at your own pace, but the train from Tangier to Fes is relatively comfortable. Tetuan-Fes is roughly 3 and a half hours by car, Tangier-Fes is roughly 5 hours by train. Tetuan-Chefchaouen is relatively well served by bus and grand taxi, Chefchauen-Fes is well served by bus.

There is a well paved toll road connecting Tangier to Fes via Rabat. The toll costs roughly 90 dirhams.

Basically, the car is only a good option for that itinerary if you plan on doing a lot of stopping, otherwise, aside from some beautiful scenery, it may not be worth the effort of the car rental and dealing with road conditions.

My fiance and I drive the Fes-Tetuan (via Chefchaouen)route quite often, in order to continue onward to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, also served by ferry from Algeciras. You may want to consider entering from one port and leaving from another...

The distance through Rabat is longer, but it takes less time because you can drive the speed limit (120).

There isnt so much to see en route from Tetouan, but the scenery is beautiful.
