Coming to Altona

My family is coming to Altona for the first time. We are looking for things to do. We are planning a trip to Adventureland, but I was wondering if there are any other places that we should visit during our trip?

For adults who like to gamble, there is a casino/race track (Prairie Meadows) in Altoona.

More family oriented options are available in nearby Des Moines (the Science Center, Historical Society Museum, Blank Park Zoo, Des Moines Art Center) and Urbandale (Living History Farms). There's a water park in Pleasant Hill (a DM suburb near Altoona). Depending on when you'll be here, the Iowa State Fair (2 weeks in mid-Aug.) is a fun place to pass the time.

Altoona is also within a half an hour's drive of Pella, a community that definitely shows its Dutch heritage, and Newton, home of a NASCAR race track.

Have a fun trip!
