weather in costa rica throughout year?

trying to decide when a good time of year to travel to Costa Rica would be. When is the rainy season? When is it most comfortable there (warm weather, less humid)? When is the 'cheapest' time of year to travel there (airfare, hotel, off-season)?

May to October is the rainy (off-season) period. I was there in April, this year. It was hot and humid most of the time, it also rained! - well, it was in the rain forest, so you have to expect it. Some parts of the country are not so bad.

It is not a rule...but from late November to July...dry season...from July to late November wet season!!

Off season is from May to early July and August to middle of December off season...most hotels follow that schedule!!

Just buckle up and enjoy the ride in paradise!!

roadadvisor...........I do so enjoy reading all the wonderful information you give. Here's mine question, now that we all have set the dates we want to go back. We are going to Dominical with a two day stop at either Savegre Lodge or Trogon Lodge on the way. Reading about the road through the mountains has definitely bothered me some. So, question.......Do you think we have made a mistake in choosing our 10 days starting November 28? Don't you get tired of us asking you so many questions all the time? You are appreciated!

As a rule, it is still raining in late November but the volume tends to taper off. I can't state as fact about any area other than the south/central Pacific coast (12 years in Dominical) but . May through August are beautiful. The afternoon rains (4pm) tend to keep things cool and everything is so much more green that in the High Season (December 15-April 15.) During verano (Dec-Apr) the maximum high temp at the beach goes to about 92 with the average about 86-88 with about 85% humidity. The humidity doesn't seem to change in invierno (May-Nov) but the increased cloud cover that cools the average to 80 and the maximum to 84 makes your shoes turn green if you don't have a dehumidified room. If you wish to travel on the CHEAP in Costa Rica, go in September/October. It rains a LOT more but if you don't mind the rain you can pretty much name your price. We have rental villas here and we will practically give them away in October. June through August is sort of a mini-high season so you can't get the deep discounts that you can later in the year. There is a period of about 10 days in late June/ early July called veronito (little summer.) This time, although not as dry as in March/April, will have greatly reduced rainfall (maybe 3 times a week) and is a wonderful time to travel. This period , according to "lo que dijeron nuestra abuelitos" starts on St. Juan el Bautista day in June (Saint John the Baptist.) Ticos travel during this time but tourism is down a bit from April 15 to July 1. You should be able to get good deals then.
