You might want to get a guidebook or look at some on-line maps to determine what you want to see and to get a sense of where things are located in Washington. The Smithsonian is not "a" building, it's a collection of museums. There's no one hotel that would be walking distance to all of them.

Walking distance to..."which" monument? Washington Monument?

There are several Embassy Suites in DC and the close-in suburbs, the closest to some of the tourist sites would be the one on 10th Street NW.

If price isn't a concern, the Mandarian Oriental is a couple of blocks from the Smithsonian Metro/Mall area.

Most of the monuments, museums, and the Capitol Hill are spread out over a rectangular area of about 3 miles wide from East to West, and about 1 mile from North to South. So you have to pick which part you want to be close to. If you pick the middle part, you still have 1.5 mile on both side. There is no hotel on top of the Mall, so your pick will have to be outside which adds to the walk.

Technically, all of downtown DC is within walking distance. You just have to walk a whole lot. The area near the Museums and such is very quiet at night and has few dining options, which makes it less desirable as a place to stay. Most visitors want to have some nice restaurants nearby and street activities in the evenings.

We often recommend visitors to stay in a lively neighborhood, and go the attractions by Metro. There are a lot good neighborhoods that are only a few Metro stops away. From Penn Quarter, you can walk to the middle of the Mall areas in 7 to 10 minutes.

No Sheraton brand hotel near the Mall comes to mind. There are Hampton Inns, Embassy Suites, and other Marriott hotels near Convention Center and Penn Quarter. There is a JW Marriott three blocks away from the White House, near the West end of the Mall.

Starwood brand hotels: W (expensive but excellent location behind the White House) and Four Points by Sheraton (affordable but more of a hike). And if you can afford the St. Regis, you're a better earner than me.

Hilton: more choices here, in that you can choose the Hampton Inn (far-ish), the Hilton Garden Inn (close), or the Capital Hilton (farther but full service). You mentioned the Embassy Suites- that is just a tad farther, located close to the convention center, but I've heard excellent things. Beware the locations of the Washington Hilton or Hilton Embassy Row- those are a Metro ride away from what you've specified.

Depending on your needs and price point you can definitely find what you need within your brand loyalty. Have fun.

Most people don't realise just how small DC actually is, at least that section which tourists are interested in.

If you stayed in any of the Marriott downtown locations, you'd be well within walking's distance.

The JW Marriott, the Metro Center Marriott, the Mariott Courtyard are all just a few blocks from each other, and right downtown, very close to the subway and walking's distance to the Smithsonian Institutions, as someone else said, more than one building. They are spread the length of The National Mall, both sides.

Also, try the Red Roof Inn in Chinatown. Only a few blocks few blocks from the other hotels I mentioned.
