We have an upcoming trip to DC and trying to get our itinerary together. We definitely want to go to the Holocaust Museum and try to get tickets for the African American Museum. What others are a must see??

I think it's up to you and your interests.

I'd start with a look at the Smithsonian museums to see which ones might appeal:

Both of those require tickets. Hopefully you are coming in ththe winter because African American tickets are gon until then thing you can get same day at 630 am or show up at 1 pm on a weekday. Another advantage of waiting until winter is hat the Holocaust museum does not need tickets then

Also consider the Newseum.

Tickets for the NMAAHC for Sept, Oct and Nov have, already been allocated- tho' there are jerks on selling these free tickets on ebay if you're coming these months. As has been mentioned already, same day options are to be online at 6.30am or to go there early afternoon and line up.

The December tickets are being allocated on Sept 6. Good luck, it's well worth it.

The Smithsonian museums are gorgeous. Visit them all if you have the time or energy.

The monuments and memorials are also beautiful. Explore them and take your time.

Everything mentioned above is free. No admission charges.

Enjoy.

Oh, you're coming in September. You'll need to go on line at 6.30 to try for same day NMAAHC tickets. These go in a minute or two. The only alternative is to wait at the NMAAHC for when they issue ticets for the aftenoon. They do that at 1pm. I don't know when you should line up to guarantee tickets. I know when Imwas there in late December that line was very long at 12.15.

Also, to visit in the afternoon may mean long waits for the History Galleries downstairs. You may want to make better use of your limited time in there by going to the Culture and Community Galleries upstairs. The 'Making a Way out of No Way' exhibition covers the same era as is in the second of the History Galleries...after the Civil War to the 1960s.

Good luck.

Re: Jenny's Post 3

Search the tool bar for 2 posts on best ways, ordering just before 9 am, to avoid disappointment for December admission.

If you are coming in mid-September, you don't need tickets for the Holocaust Museum. Go whenever you want.

As for the NAAHM, several posts have discussed how to try to get tickets.

Other museums--The Smithsonian museums are good and they are free, but my favorite DC museum is the Newseum. However, there is an admission fee and it requires a good chunk of your time to see, so it may not be at the top of your list if your time and/or budget is limited. You'd want to allow at least 4 - 6 hours to see the museum, but the tickets are good for 2 consecutive days, so that helps.

Several of the The Smithsonian Museums have lunch cafes on the lower level.
