I've done I-80 about an hour into Pennsylvania and it's pretty flat. The area around the Delaware Water Gap is a little hilly but not much. Don't know I-76

Since you will be driving through the Alleghany Mountains you will have mountains on both routes. 76 which is the PA turnpike has tunnels through some of them.

But, as AERULES askes, where in New Jersey? RT. 80 brings you to the northern part of the state and NYC. RT 76 ends in Central New Jersey near Philadelphia. Your final destination makes a big difference as to which to pick.

I-80 is probably a little smoother, but either way you're going thru mountains so there's not much you can do to avoid the various inclines and declines, hills and valleys.

But...if you need to go to South Jersey (Trenton/Philly and South), you might as well take the PA Turnpike (I-76).

either one your destination matters. If you are headed to north jersey 1-80 , which is free in Pa. I believe 80 may be the ohio turnpike. If you are headed to central jersey either might work - again depends on what part of central Jersey as you might angle down to Route 78 across the "top" of central jersey. Anywhere near 195 in NJ take I-76.

I agree 80 unless you are heading for far south in Jersey.

76 though the Laural Highlands is a lot of mountains for an Ohioan.

80 much less so IMO.

Too bad the OP has not returned to tell us his destination in New Jersey. If he is going to one of the shore towns then taking 80 will add a considerable amount of time to the trip.
