new hampshire summer vacation ideas

Planning a 7 to 10 day vacation in New Hampshire this summer. Would like to visit the mountains, a lake , and quaint towns. We have two girls ages 10 and 8. We like active vacations and would like to hike, bike, horseback ride, kayak ... really anything outside. Love cute towns, fun food, good micro brews, and cool art festivals. We also enjoy concerts in the park.

Husband mountain bikes so he is looking to do that as well.

Was thinking a week rental on or near a lake would be home base, but we could break the trip up into two parts, lake region and mountain region.

We are coming from Pennsylvania and are really unfamiliar with the state and which towns/areas would best work for what we want to do. Any thoughts would be great. Thank you!

The lakes and the mountains are not so far apart that you couldn't just rent a place on a lake, and then do the mountains as day trips from there, particularly if you found a place on, say, Newfound or Squam lakes. Alternatively, stay in the Lake Sunapee area and you've got Mount Sunapee and Mount Kearsarge right there (and multiple lakes to choose from - Lake Sunapee itself, Little Lake Sunapee, Pleasant Lake, and numerous smaller ponds). The major town there is New London, which probably has a lot of what you are looking for.

Here are a couple suggestions...

- Stay in the North Conway area. There are lots of house rentals on Echo Lake in N. Conway. This is close to shopping/attractions in North Conway as well as parks, swimming, and hiking. There are often concert and festivals in N conway as well as a great theater that does family friendly plays and musicals.

Here are some possible activities:

- hiking in the White Mountains. Try Mt. Willard, Mt. Kearsarge, or Aruthusa Falls. (I mention other great family friendly hikes on my blog here: http://thefreelanceadventurer.blogspot.com/2013/06/5-best-family-hikes-in-white-mountains.html

- swimming/playing in a river. Diana's Bath is right near Echo Lake and is a fun spot to swim and picnic. You could also try lower falls on the Kanacamangus Highway (blogged here: http://thefreelanceadventurer.blogspot.com/2013/06/kancamagus-cool-down.html)

- Tubing on the Saco River - You can buy your own tubes or rent here: http://www.sacorivertubing.com/

- MicroBrews? Eat/Drink at the Moat Mountain Brewpub in North Conway

- Cute Towns? Nearby Jackson has adorable covered bridges.

Have a GREAT trip!
