Winter drive through Arizona advice

Hi all,

My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Keystone in Colorado for a snowboarding trip beginning at the start of February 2019. We are driving from Los Angeles to Keystone and making the following stops:

Las Vegas - 2 nights

Grand Canyon South Rim - no overnight stop just a day trip on the way through

Page - 2 nights

Moab - 1 night

We’re quite flexible with timings so the nightly stays aren’t absolute and are willing to change.

We’re both from NZ and used to driving long distances so understand some days will be long drives. We will be stopping to see the Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, Horsehoe Bend then some other places in Utah and Colorado. Are there any other places along this route that are off the beaten track a bit and would be worthwhile seeing. I’m open to any suggestions but my boyfriend and I are into outdoors activities like hiking, (although it will be winter) sightseeing, horse riding. We also like old ‘ghost towns’, museums, anything to do with history, learning about the local culture and we love food! Also if anyone has any previous knowledge of what the roads are like in February that would be appreciated. We will have a rental car but it will probably be just a corolla sedan or similar. Will the main highways be clear if snow and ice?

Many thanks

Jess

Monitor weather forecasts a few days in advance. In the event of an active winter storm near the Grand Canyon National Park or Bryce, expect roads to close. That means seek shelter, wait out the blizzard and do not proceed until you have confirmation that roads have reopened.

Thanks RedRox. Do you have any recommendations for a detailed weather app or website over there?

Accuweather is a good weather source.

Check individual state DOT websites for current road conditions.

"A day trip through" at GCNP needs most of a day, and an overnight stay somewhere, best in the park.

grandcanyonlodges.com/ 5 in park lodges, Xanterra - 888-297-2757

visitgrandcanyon.com/ 1 in park lodge - Yavapai Lodge - 877-404-4611

Tusayan: hotels in the village just outside the park (use travel site or TA)

nps.gov/grca/ park website for park information

Park lodges book up to a year in advance. Sometimes cancellations happen in park lodging and don't appear quickly on the website. If no availability on the website, call often and ask about availability. The park no longer produces a newsletter. Information about programs, shuttles, overlooks, etc. can be found on the park website. GCNP South Rim is very self-touring.

Read Top Questions at right in GCNP forum (on a PC not a phone).
