Hi need advice on routes to take. Will be head out at 5am. Are we in time to catch sunset when we arrive.
What are you asking?
Are you asking whether you can travel from the state of South Dakota (SD) to the Grand Canyon National Park? If so, just picking a random place in SD, it is about 1,200 miles. Not something you would do in one day.
Sunset at the Grand Canyon September 17 is around 6.30.Edited: 01 August 2018, 18:22
The fastest route along I-8 to I-10 to US-60 to AZ-89 to I-40 to AZ-64 will be about 500 miles and about 10 hours, wheels turning. It doesn't allow for congestion due to traffic or accidents, pit stops for fuel, food or comfort breaks. You'd be cutting it fine trying to get to the canyon for sunset.
Ideally, you want to be at the rim about 1/2 hour to an hour before sunset and watch the changing lights on the canyon walls and buttes. If the sky then puts on a display after the sun has set, that's a bonus.
Bad plan. Better to look forward to sunrise and sunset on the 18th.
@jane s Thank you for your advice. will plan our trip accordingly. :)
@RedRox will heed your advice to watch sunrise instead. Where is the best point to watch sunrise. And I only have approx. 6-7 hours in south rim before i start driving to Page to catch sunset.
