Apologies if this subject has been previously discussed, but are travellers aware that a new law in Lithuania has been recently passed forbidding the use of mobile phones when using a pedestrian crossing? Apparently offenders can be fined up to €40.Can anyone confirm the above ?

It has not been discussed yet, it’s a very recent change in legislation coming into force November 1st.

The legal text , forgive me for my free translation i’m not a lawyer, sounds like : “ pedestrians, before entering the carriage way or being on it, must avoid any actions ( use mobile phones or similar) what are distracting their attention from the surroundings and observing the traffic situation and what prevents from being sure about safe passing”. However I also have read an lawyer’ s explanation that words “must avoid” are not equal to “forbids”. So we’ ll see later how it’s implemented.

I am sceptical as to whether this peripheral legislation will do much to address the very poor road safety culture in LT. It would be more productive if the current laws were implemented more forcefully.

The new legislation will not make any difference whatsoever to the driving culture in LT. I'm married to a Lithuanian and have been driving over there on a regular basis since 2004. It never ceases to amaze just how aggressive SOME drivers are. Blatant disrespect for other road users, wanna be gangsters in their BMW's with blacked out Windows, racing at speed up to pedestrian crossings when the public are crossing, stopping just inches away from you! No need!
