3 days at lake bled

Hi All

my wife and I are planning a long weekend away, we've managed to persuade our babies grandmother to look after him while we get a well needed break.

We are looking at 3 nights in Slovenia and possibly using lake bled as our base around mid October so I have some questions and hope someone can help:

Will it be too early for snow in mid October for the mountain tops?

What would you recommend doing in lake bled for 3 days?

would you do a day trip anywhere else?

will the bars be busy in the evenings at all? we're not after any night clubs just a couple of bars with maybe some live music for a few drinks in the evening.

we wont have a car so would rely on public transport/bikes etc to get around.

Bled looks like a lovely place to relax and unwind I just want to make sure there is enough there to keep us busy

Thanks in advance

Snow in October is possiable but only on very high picks. But insted of the snow there be very nice autumn colors.

Visit Radovljica town (8km from Bled), also lake bohinj. Both with bus. From Bohinj you can go to Vogel mountain with cable car in nice weather. Vintgar gorge by foot is half a day trip and Bled for full day (lake, castle, island, spa).

Also take a bus and go to the capital Ljubljana or even rather stay in Ljubljana and do a day trip to Bled, Postojna cave, Lasko spa with train.

Ljubljana is much more for 'night life' in that time of the year and is also preaty green (Park Tivoli, castle), but Bled is more quite and more in the nature. Depend what you prefer. Small town or town on the countryside.

For 3 days there will be plenty to keep you occupied. As it says above, do make sure you visit Radovljica, just 7kms from Bled and one of the 3 best preserved medieval towns in Slovenia. You could also visit Skofja Loka, which is also one of the 3 (the 3rd, Ptuj would be a bit far considering your limited time and lack of own transport).

For some ideas and inspiration you can read my blog, where I write quite a lot about my home town of Radovljica, as well as all other areas of Slovenia - happy reading and happy trip planning!

Regarding the bars in Bled... in October it will be quiet in Bled. If anything will be happening, expect it on friday or saturday evenings.

If you want to go out for a drink (not clubbing) and won't be staying during the weekend, consider basing yourself in Ljubljana. Bled is very lovely indeed, but it's quieter, it's what makes it a relaxing destination. Ljubljana, on the other hand, is a city and while it's very beautiful, relaxed and has loads of green spaces where you can unwind, it's not quite like Bled. It is more handy than Bled if you would like to do a day trip to the coastal region, such as the caves or Piran, but then Bled would have to be visited as a day trip, too. On the other hand, Bled is better for day trips to other places in the Alpine region like historic Radovljica and Lake Bohinj.

In short, there's no easy answer, but I don't think you'll go wrong with whatever you choose.

I really think you should consider renting a car. I don't think it is at all difficult to find your way and it makes your time so much more productive and free.

I got a good price from Budget rent a car. Also don't go with the lowest cost as some of the companies are a bit inscrupulous.
