Food Glorious Food?

We are coming to Prague very soon, and I am just wondering if there are any dishes we really should try. I have looked at restaurant menus, and we eat nearly anything, and I know everyone will have their own preferences, but was just wondering if there is any dish we should try.

Also we have booked the ballet for the Saturday night, and I am wondering if we should eat before we go, or are places open to eat afterwards. Can anyone recommend any places in the area of the state opera house?

Thanks for your help.

I would highly recommend the Cafe Imperial. You can look on-line at the menu. You should make reservations. I love duck and it was delicious. Desserts are fabulous.

I'd recommend a knee, knuckle or leg. :)

I've heard Trdelnik is very good. It is more of a snack/treat, but I'm definitely trying some when I visit.

Not sure what it is called but we had a twisty bread "bun" at the end of the Charles bridge which was hot/warm and almondy and delicious.

Koleno. It's a slow roasted pork shank.

Unless you want to spend a lot of money at La Degustation, almost any pub will do for koleno.

Firstly, one of the Czech dishes is Svickova souce with dumplings (beef in sweet and sour souce).

Secondly, I would rather go for a dinner before the performance as some of the restaurants my be closed after that.

And my recommendation for the restaurant close to the Opera house is definitely Cestr restaurant (pronounce as Chester) which is located nex to the Opera. The restaurant is acclaimed by its beef from private sources. Book well in advance. Website: http://cestr.ambi.cz

Was it Bessie Smith that said: "Give me a pigfoot and a bottle of beer' ?

No better City to do that in!
