Itinerary from Albany to New York by public transport

We don't drive and have 4 nights 'free' to travel from Albany to New York arriving in NY on the evening of Wednesday, 24th August. We like walking but not tough hiking. We are thinking of spending 1 night in Albany and visiting Beacon before leaving for NY. Any suggestions for reasonable accommodation and interesting places to visit/walk along the way. Many thanks.

I love Rhinebeck - a town with interesting shops and good restaurants. While the train does not stop in Rhinebeck, it stops in nearby Rhinecliff and you can get a cab up to Rhinecliff. The Beekman Arms inn is the oldest operating Inn in America.

The Walkway over the Hudson, an old train bridge that has recently been converted to a pedestrian walkway, is easily accessible from the Poughkeepsie train station and a lovely walk.

North of Poughkeepsie you'll have to use Amtrak. https://www.amtrak.com/northeast-train-routes

From Poughkeepsie south to the city you can use the Metro North commuter trains http://web.mta.info/mnr/html/mnrmap.htm (Schedules are pretty frequent and reservations are not required for the commuter trains.)

The train ride down the Hudson River is quite scenic you'll want a seat on the right side of the southbound train from around the town of Hudson on south when the train is on the east side of the river. (It's on the west side of the river for the first part from Albany - don't remember exactly where it switches sides of the river.)

Besides Beacon, consider some of these:

The town of Hudson has attracted a lot of wealthy weekend house people and farm-to-table Brooklyn escapees http://gotohudson.net/

Near Poughkeepsie, FDR's Home, Hyde Park https://www.nps.gov/hofr/index and the Vanderbilt Mansion https://www.nps.gov/vama/index.htm are quite nice and there are some nice walking trails hikethehudsonvalley.com/fdr-natl-historic-si… and a seasonal shuttle bus from the train station to the Hyde Park

Tarrytown area has a number of historic sites http://www.hudsonriver.com/tarrytown Kykuit is one of my favorites www.hudsonvalley.org/historic-sites/kykuit and the nearby ://www.stonebarnscenter.org/ is interesting and has the Blue Hill Restaurant (pricey, reservations needed) and café (much more affordable) https:/…cafe-grain-bar

For some places you may need to take a taxi a few miles. For taxis at the Metro North stations, if there are no taxis waiting there should be info posted with the number of a local cab company - you can also find taxi service info by clicking on the individual station names in the MN map linked above.
