Airlie beach for 5 nights- do we need a car?

We are a group of 6 adults looking at staying in Airlie beach for 5 nights at the end of April and thinking of staying at the summit apartments - do you think we will need to hire a car? Or will we get away with airport shuttles and the odd taxi for groceries etc? We are looking at doing a couple of day trips to the islands.

hi londonlil

I can't answer your question but we have just booked Summit Apartments ( a 7 night 2 trip package) We were also thinking of just staying 5 nights, but the 7 night package was a really good deal.

We will be back in the UK in early April, so feel free to PM any questions when we get back.

These apartments are located up a very steep hill. In theory, you can manage in AIrlie Beach without a car,but getting to and from the main street may be difficult. Having said, that most tours do offer to pick up/drop off so you should be OK for daytrips etc. You would probably want to get a taxi back up the hill if you go out for dinner or shopping though. The hills at Airlie Beach are very steep.

Thank you!

Also does anyone know which airport is the best/easiest to fly into?

This is from research, as not been yet, but may help.

There are daily flights from Sydney direct to Hamilton Island

There are daily flights from Brisbane to Proserpine with Jetstar and Virgin.

Transfers from Hamilton have just gone up tp $55 pp one way.

Transfers from Prosperpine are $15. These ar to Airlie Beach.

We stayed at the Shingley Beach Resort which is a 10 minute walk from the centre of Airlie Beach. The resort is at sea level with great views over the sea, so there are no big hills to climb. The best place for groceries is Canonvale (15 minutes walk in the opposite direction from Airlie Beach) for which you will need a taxi, especially as there will be six of you.

For further details read my review of Shingley Beach resort.

We used the airport shuttles to travel to and from Prosperine Airport.

Unless you want to be involved in a heath and fitness program while you are on holidays, I would suggest you hire a car. The supermarket is in Cannonvale. There is a small supermarket in Airlie Beach but I sure wouldn't be impressed carting groceries up that hill. I would suggest you arrive here size up the hill and see what you think. Down in the main street you can choose hire car companies.

Definitely hire a car - at least you will be able to go touring on your own.. there are some lovely destinations close at hand.

Bowen is located on the northern side of the Whitsunday Islands a Min's drive from Airlie Beach. If you love beaches then Bowen will surprise and please you with it's stunning pristine beaches. You have Horseshoe Bay / Front Beach /Murray Bay / Kings Beach / Queens Beach / Gray Beach/ and Rose Bay Beach.

There is also an excellent walk called Mother Beddock Walking Track, which starts at the Horseshoe Bay Resort and winds around cliffs and beaches offering spectacular views.

AYR - If you love bird watching then you will find Ayr fascinating with over 250 different bird species listed and abundance of wetlands, rivers estuaries, and creeks makes it a Bird Watcher's paradise.

Its also known for its excellent fishing, crabbing and most important Ayr is the biggest sugar/ mango and melon region in Australia. So if you love those mangoes, well Ayr is the place to indulge your taste buds with mangoes delights.

For Airlie Beach - Whitsunday Coast Airport is located in Proserpine, approximately 25 minutes to Airlie Beach.

The airport is serviced by Virgin Blue and Jetstar offering daily flights from Brisbane and connecting flights from other cities. Buses and taxis meet every flight to transfer guests to Airlie Beach, or to ferries to the island resorts.
