It will be the middle of winter and cold- frosts, some snow, day temps- 4c-12c, wind chill alot less. But you'll also have crisp, bright sunny days. Campervan will be cold, make sure you bring plenty of warm clothing and order extra bedding from rental company. You will need to hook up to power source at camping grounds to get heat during the night. It can be fun if you're prepared for it, make sure you get a 6 berth. You gotta love your friends!

Allow a little extra on the budget to get a motel unit or cabin in the camping grounds for the odd night. It is good to have a break from the van, a decent shower and some space to relax and not be in each other's hair for a short time.

Should be some snow in August, fancy some skiing in Queenstown, Wanaka or Mount Hutt ??

For four people motels would be a reasonable alternative, many have two bedroom units so you can share costs, or if your budget is a bit lower there are lots of backpackers in the popular places.

Statistically the lower south Is should average 1-10 degrees celcius on any given day. Frosts are pretty likely and there'll (hopefully)be some pretty deep snow on the mountains.

(see wunderground.com/NORMS/DisplayIntlNORMS.asp… for more info)

So yes, things might be a bit on the cool side, but with Irish blood in your arteries you should be fine!

Having said that, it's worth remembering that you're flying to a small island half-way to the south pole, so anything can and will happen!
