Hi there

Firstly, to get a birthday cake, I would suggest that you ring ahead and pre-order one from the Cheesecake Shop, they are the best place in town for cakes....

Phone number, 09 4308700

They are in Tawera Shopping centre, in the centre of the city.

Here are a few ideas for things to do:

Maori Tour

The Perfect Day cruise

Zion Wildlife Gardens

Dolphin Watching in the Bay of Islands

Serendipity farm park

Glenbervie Adventure Forest

I hope that some of the above is helpful

If you don't want to phone and book a speciality cake from the Cheesecake shop in Tarewa Road shopping complex (very rich! and pricey), the Maunu Hot Bread shop along Maunu Road sells freshly baked cakes, including chocolate, sponges, lamington, coffee cakes- these sell around $7.00 each.

Another really neat alternative from Andy's list, is the Whangarei Museum and Kiwihouse at Heritage Park, Whangarei at the top of Maunu Road (main road to Dargaville). Kiwi-house has live birds on display - main aim is conservation of our native Kiwis. Plus there are often live open days at the weekends aimed at family visits, with the small steam train operating. Lots of fun for kids. Whilst next door is the Native Bird Rescue sanctuary - gain popular and educational for children - with a talking tui-bird.

Clapham's Clocks Museum is located at the Town Basin, on Hatea River in the central city. Nice spot also to stop for Whangarei made fudge, and ice-creams, as well as the Burning Issues gallery often has a glass-maker working his craft (free public viewing gallery at rear of retail shop). There is an excellent children's covered playground at the Town Basin to the rear of the Clapham's clocks, with BBQ's for public use.

Mair Park is another neat attraction for kids, past the playground is gentle bush walk down to the river to feed the ducks. Entry off hatea Drive to Rurumoki Street. The higher reaches of the Hatea River contain the famous Whangarei Falls, which can be viewed from above, below and both sides. Safe for kids might I add. At the Town basin end of the river, there are kayaks for hire.

My children are somewhat older than yours now, but we've had lots of adventures around our fantastic city (Whangarei) and never get tired of repeating these attractions over again. Enjoy your visit.
