Queenstown-Franz Josef (Honeymoon) June 2012

Hi All

We will be planning our honeymoon to the South Islands this June 2012. We will be arriving at Queenstown Airport at 2.30pm on the 6th June 2012. This is the itinery we have planned. Appreciate any advises or critics since we are first timers at NZ.

6th June- Drive to Wanaka (Overnight) - Advise on how long the drive from Queenstown airport? Suggested accommodation?

7th June- Morning drive up to Franz Josef Glaciers - Advise on driving times? Hoping to do a helihike by afternoon. Overnight at Franz Josef. Accomodation?

8th June- Morning drive back to Queenstown - Driving times & suggested routes? Hoping to drop by the Nevis Bungy Jump and hopefully reach Queenstown in time to check in the hotel. Afternoon free for shopping and exploring.

9th June- Drive to Glenorchy and going for horse ride with High Country Horses. Afternoon free for sight-seeing.

10th June- Depart to Queenstown Airport by 9am.

Any other suggestions to include in our plans? Much appreciated and many thanks!

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your honeymoon :)

Sadly you have not allowed enough time to complete your ambitious plans. Plus travelling in June you will find the roads freeze overnight and you are therefore best not to drive before 10am or after dark.

to answer your questions;

6th - the drive to Wanaka would take 1 to 1.5 hours depending on which route you choose - HOWEVER - best not to drive after a long flight from Singapore - jet lagged drivers are a menace to themselves and to everyone else on the road.

7th the drive to Franz takes most visitors about 6 hours to drive, this does not leave enough time for an afternoon heli-hike

8 the drive back to Queenstown is on the same road - it will take 7 hours or more - you won't have time for the Nevis Bungee

I suggest you decide what is the most important activity for your honeymoon and work the rest around that. No need to drive all the way to Franz to see a glacier, you can helicopter from Queenstown or Wanaka and have a snow landing on the local mountains, though you can't walk on the local glaciers as you can in Franz.

Hope this helps, happy planning :)

Hello!

Thank you for your prompt reply.

What would be your suggested itinery? We would pick the helihike at franz josef and the horse ride at queenstown as our main activity.

Please advise.

Thank you! =)

Or is there any place between Queenstown-Franz Josef where we could stop and overnight to cut the travelling time?

The thing is... we booked our flights with Qantas Airways and there are no other scheduled flights from Queenstown-Singapore. We would also love to extend our stay if not for that fact...=(

You need to allow one full day to get Queenstown to Franz, one full day at Franz for a chance at a heli-hike (many trips are cancelled or postponed due to weather. June isn't overly wet {you have about 50% chance of rain} so you might be in luck) - then you need one full day to return to Queenstown. That is your three day honeymoon used up.

If me, I would forget about Franz for this trip.

We will check with Qantas again to see whether we could extend our stay. *cross fingers*

Meanwhile, may I check with you the petrol price needed for all the travelling?

From Queenstown-Wanaka, Wanaka-Franz Josef and back to Queenstown.

If we were to extend until the 12th, where could we fit in the Nevis Bungee?

Any recommendations of accommodations in Wanaka and Franz Josef?

Thank you! You are of sooo much help!

Petrol is currently $2.20 per litre, expect to pay more at remote Franz and Wanaka.

you can check mileage here www.aatravel.co.nz/main/td-calculator.php

Your fuel consumption will be determined by what vehicle you drive and your style of driving.

ideally, you will want a few extra days. Then you could

6 arrive Queenstown

7 explore

8 drive to Wanaka

9 drive to Franz

10 explore

11 drive to Christchurch

12 fly home

Once you have finalised your itinerary then it is time to begin looking at accommodation options.

Fill up as much as possible in Queenstown (and even Wanaka) before heading through to Franz Josef. Petrol prices in Franz are quite scary (almost 30c per litre more than the main cities).

Understandably though, Franz Josef is very remote, and getting petrol out there can't be cheap.

Have you thought about flying up to Fox and Franz do the heli hike and then return to Queenstown via a overhead flight of Milford sound.

It would be a day you would never forget.,
