Unfortunately, TA doesn't see it fit to list the Minden Lookout (viewpoint) fit for listing at present. As such, we thought we'd drop a note here for the time being.
For those who enjoy viewpoints, there is a nice viewpoint called the Minden Lookout, found approximately 10 kilometers west of Tauranga, just off SH2.
We visited recently the Minden Lookout site and enjoyed the views of the Bay of Plenty, the city of Tauranga and surrounding communities from this location, situated around 240 meters above sea level.
Here you will find a constructed viewpoint structure that was built by the local Omokoroa-Te Puna Lions Club back in 1978. This is a multiple levelled structure with both covered and open air space. There are a couple of picnic tables as well.
You can find the Minden Viewpoint while driving on SH2 out of Tauranga around 10 kilometers. When you approach Minden Avenue in the community of Te Puna, turn left and proceed around 3 kilometers up the mountain drive. The lookout structure is quite distinct and will be on the left side of the road. There are only a handful of parking spots available, just next to the lookout structure.
Overall, we enjoyed the views but didn't find them as profound or impressive as others in North Island. Considering the distance from Tauranga, the Minden Lookout is much less accessible compared to the Mount Maunganui viewpoints in town.
As such, if you don't have a car, we'd give this one a pass. Otherwise, for those who enjoy viewpoints, its worth a quick stop and look if making your way out of Taurangi on SH2.
Hope this is useful to anyone researching stops to make in this area of North Island.
