Mount maunganui or Papamoa?

Our family of 6 (four kids ranging from 14-23) will be staying in the area for a week over New Years. We're going to get a house and we're trying to decide whether staying in MM or Papamoa would be a better move during that time. We chose MM originally because the combination of beach and action happening in that area. Several of the Papamoa houses remaining available have better proximity to the beach, but I assume further from food, shopping, action the kids would like. I know it's pretty close to drive to MM from there, but I also understand it can be hard to find parking during this time. Any insights would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I would say if you can get a nicer house close to the beach at Papamoa, then go for that. Unless you manage to secure a rental close to the Mountain end of the Mt, you will have a reasonably long walk and / or a drive to enjoy that area anyway. The whole stretch of beach from the Mountain all the way to Papamoa is stunning and it will be enjoyable for your family to be able to stroll to the beach with ease rather than adding in a drive or long walk each time you feel like a swim.

Papamoa has a lovely beach, and you could always drive to Mt Maunganui for a change of scenery. Papamoa has a shopping centre, and the Bayfair complex is not too far to drive to if you need to be near more shops.

Thanks guys. I'm looking at one place now that is only three blocks from the Mount (although pricier), one that is 10 minutes away, and the one in Papamoa says it is a 2 minute drive to lifeguarded Omanu beach.

Besides the beach itself, is there anything that would make the area right around the Mount much more attractive to my 4 kids? (Pretty normal types, not too crazy but like to wander around.)

More scenery at the mount. Ocean beach, Mauao and Pilot Bay combined. Plus there are the thermal pools at the base of the mount. Plenty for youngsters to do on holiday.

If you prefer a quieter area, then Papamoa would be a good choice. Both places have shopping facilities, with the mount having more cafes.

Papamoa has pretty good shopping and, as above, closer to the beach would be my priority.

Parking at "the Mount" can be a pain, but those of us who live over the bridge in Tauranga don't let it deter us from visiting, you may just have to park down a side street and walk a bit.

Actually, just saw the age of your kids and teenagers would probably enjoy being able to walk to the beach, cafes, movies of the Mount, but either location would be great.

FYI Omanu Beach is a lot closer to the Mount than Papamoa.

However while the house may be a 2 minute drive to that

beach the beach carpark will be full at that time of the year.

But there is more - have a look at google maps for Omanu

and you will note a car park off Golf Road by the Bridge club

and on front of the Omanu Bowling that is about 5 minute

walk from the beach - but leave a place for my car.

Also note that there are numerous walkways down to the

beach in that area from Oceanbeach Road

I would for sure stay in the mount. But bare in mind that the mount is going to be very busy.

More FYI.

There are 3 surf clubs ( "lifeguards") along the

beach which "stretches" from the Mount to the

Kaituna River. Namely the Mount, Omanu &

Papamoa Beach. There is beachside parking

along Marine Parade, Surf Ave.(Omanu), a

reserve off the beach end of Palm Beach Bld.,

Papamoa Beach Domain & Taylors Reserve.

There is a very "wide" reserve along most of

Papamoa Beach with only the occasional

walking track through the vegetation.

I would be suspious of any "times" quoted in

conjunction with accomodation. For instance

any house in Papamoa would be far more than

"a 2 minute drive" to Omanu beach . Use

google map for times between the "place" and

the car parks mentioned above. At that time of

the year any where near a beach would be very

busy.
