What are the laws regarding smoking?

I need to know the laws regarding smoking in New Zealand. My late husband died of lung cancer and I have an allergy to cigarette smoke. In the USA I am protected, but need to know the situation in New Zealand.

One situation in particular was on the Lakeland Queen paddleboat, people were complaining of smoking allowed on the front of the boat with the doors left open.

Smoking is prohibited in all public places and public buildings. Also restaurants and public areas of hotels etc. most hotels also ban smoking in the rooms

It's banned on all public transport.

Overall it's pretty much a blanket ban in all enclosed places. Many councils also ban smoking in the streets.

It's getting increasingly tough for smokers.

It is still possible to get second hand smoke, as you discovered on your paddle boat tour, but generally smokers are fairly considerate and will move or stub out if it's causing discomfort.

Some bars and restaurants will provide a smoking area - usually outside, so if you are seated inside a bar or restaurant and not near an open window facing out onto a smoking area you should be OK.

You use the expression that you are "protected" by the law in the US.

While the law makes smoking difficult in NZ you will not see the police arrive if someone lights up. You will not be able to sue someone who exposes you to second hand smoke. It is possible the establishment will be fined for allowing smoking to occur but that doesn't happen very often.

Smokers will be asked to desist, and may be asked to leave if they continue.

At least smoking is covered by regulations... you are more at risk whilst walking..... or partaking in "al fresco" style footpath establishments where diesel and exhaust fumes are not ( as yet) Far more prevalent than encountering smokers who in NZ are mostly aware and polite not to light up in the presence of others.

Human behaviour in NZ is influenced by laws put in place, ...

Firstly, by the Central Government that cover all of NZ. A google may provide more info but smoking is banned in public places of business, wine and dining, work vehicles, buses, taxi, plane, train etc....

Secondly by 'Local Governments. City authorities will have various bylaws that may extend beyond those put in place by Central Government. Some cities will 'ban smoking' in confined areas, playgrounds, fixed seating (at a stadium).
