Hobbiton - late October - book in advance?

Hi,

We want to visit Hobbiton on either a Wednesday or Thursday. This will be in late October. Is it necessary to buy tickets to Hobbiton in advance, or can we purchase at the site?

Thank you,

I doubt that it would be necessary at that time of year but you may have to wait and hour or so if a particular tour is full. Leave it until you know what the weather will be like and then choose the better day of the two and book online. You then just pick up your tickets at reception at the Shires Rest.

The only exception to that would be if you want to do a dinner tour then I'd book sooner. We booked online two days prior during the busy season and still had a choice.

Totally agree with Toddy. If you want the dinner tour - book it in advance. Otherwise, wait and see what the weather is like, then choose a time that suits you.

While it crosses my mind - the highest waterfall in the North Island is not far away, in the Kaimai Ranges, east of Matamata. It's name is Wairere - literally meaning waterfall in Maori, and plunges 153m/466ft. If you enjoy hiking, head over there, but note that the track is very steep. Just to the north is the Mokena Geyser at Te Aroha. It may or may not put on a show - most temperamental thing - but it is, apparently, the world's only hot soda geyser.

Not necessary...just turn up. Public holidays and long weekends it is very busy but mid week will be fine. It's well sign posted from either direction and the actual address for your GPS is 501 Buckland Road, Hinuera, Matamata 3400.

For the benefit of other visitors next summer, although it seems not the OP, can I remind those who favour last minute booking that the cruise ship season begins again in October - although there appear to be only 2 cruises in early to mid-October and none in late October. It only takes one ship, in port for one day to over-run the capacity of popular attractions.

We also recommend that you book - regardless of the time of the year - as you never know what else is going to happen - and we have had guest drive up from Rotorua and not be able to get on ANY tour!! A day wasted.
