Short Auckland stop over, airport question

Hi,

If you fly on an international flight (say Vancouver to Brisbane) with air New Zealand and have a 4 hr layover in Auckland, would you be able to meet up with a friend in the airport for a few hours before catching the connecting flight to Brisbane? Just not sure if we'd have to recheck in and how long security takes etc. Itinerary below:

Air New Zealand Flight 23 - 8:15 Vancouver (YVR) / 5:00am Auckland (AKL)

4h 25m Layover in Auckland, New Zealand (AKL)

Air New Zealand Flight 135 - 9:25am Auckland (AKL)/ 11:00am Brisbane (BNE)

Thanks!

The short answer is yes, probably, but... I assume you are ticketed right through Vancouver to Brisbane? So you will not have to contend with baggage, as it will be transferred to your new flight. So you would need to land in Auckland, complete customs and immigration, meet your friend, then re-enter airside through departures, completing departure formalities on your way. If you only have carry-on, this should be doable, especially since you can always abandon this plan if you get holdups.

But... you will be entering NZ, so you will need an entry visa - which may not be worth it for an hour, but only you can decide this. This is why most people stay airside and wait in the transit lounge.

I suggest that you contact Air NZ to enquire if this is possible. Assuming that you have checked luggage to your final destination, the theory of going through border security appears possible, but I would not give a definitive answer without knowing what the airline and border checks agree to.
