8 nights in vic/melbourne

hi there,

i’ll be flying into melbourne from sg from may 19-27.

tentatively, we have planned the below:

day 1

- pick up car from airport

- drive to philip island, stay for the night

day 2

- drive to apollo bay, for the night

day 3

- great ocean road

- farm stay at warnambool

day 4 onwards

- back to melbourne

wanted to check if the route/ planning for the first few days makes sense? we want to spend more time in melbourne to explore the city and beaches, but a bit unsure on planning the drive along great ocean road!

will be traveling with a 2 year old toddler in tow so advice on places to go will be appreciated!!!

thanks in advance!

The usual Singapore intinerary... Please don't drive after an overnight international flight. Stay in Melbourne city first, with public transport, then pick up your car for the road trip when fully rested.

Spend the first few days in the city. Rest. Acclimatise. Give your toddler time to acclimatise and relax. Do the road trip afterwards. Keep in mind that by May the daylight hours will be short and drivers without local experience should not plan to drive in the dark. Remember to book a child car seat for your rental car.

Here is a suggested itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive Melbourne airport. Skybus into city. Stay Melbourne CBD

Day 2: Melbourne sightseeing - you can use free city tram.

Day 3: Pick up hire car, start drive to GOR

Day 4: GOR Farm stay Warrnambool

Day 5: Return from GOR by inland route. Overnight Melbourne

Day 6: Drive to Phillip Island. Sightseeing and Penguin parade. Overnight Phillip Island

Day 7: Return to Melbourne via the Dandenong Ranges. Return hire car.

Day 8: Sightseeing/shopping Melbourne

You need longer on the GOR part, and you don't want to be doing long drives on the day you arrive. Parking in Melbourne for the hire car can be very expensive - try to find accommodation that includes car parking.

Just be aware that sunset at the time in May when you are travelling will be just after 5pm. Its a good idea to be in the town where you are staying no later than late afternoon due to the risk of animal activity.

The shorter days will impact on the time you have for sightseeing as there is a lot to see along the route for that reason I suggest you plan to spend the first night at Apollo Bay and the second night at either Port Campbell or Warrnambool/Port Fairy and return to Melbourne via the Princes highway.

The GOR especially from Anglesea to the 12A is slow travelling at the best of times due to the nature of the route plus you are likely to encounter road works at various locations along the GOR and on the Princes highway.

+1 for yvwords . Absolutely more logical and thank you yvwords.

Sometimes you just need a local to help plan things out into a logical order.
