Best places to stay in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane

We are 4 women travelling to Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane in the end of August. Where to stay is the question? We will be in each city for 3-4 nights. We are thinking that we want to be in or near CBD/Downtown for convenience to good public transportation (we are not going to rent a car). We are interested in either 2 rooms in a Bed and Breakfast or a 2 bedroom apartment with kitchenette. We are not concerned if it's 'fancy' but it needs to be clean, and in a safe area, and of course, not overly expensive. Would prefer not to exceed $200 per night US, which seems reasonable, based on prelimary research.

ptflynn, have a look at the site about melbourne with swimming pools, there is a fair bit of good advice in that post from 6Andy6. Most places in the city are great for public transport, the trams run up and down every second street and run all the time. The rail does a city loop, so you may see places close to Museum, Flagstaff and Parliament Stations. Find a few you like and just ask about them, even many areas in the surrounding suburbs are close to trams and trains, East Melbourne, South Yarra, West Melbourne/Docklands and Carlton.

We had friends over recently from New Zealand for the tennis, 3 groups in fact. Two stayed at the Marriot in Exhibition St and they raved over it, the others stayed at the Saville in Russell St and were very happy but I don't like that street location...keep in mind the Saville Hotel is not the same as the Saville Suites in Exhibition St.

What did you ladies want to do whilst here..?? Ellemay and EJH have some great posts on Melbourne shopping and there are many, many, many good restaurants and nightspots for ALL age groups. Will

In the Sydney the best location to be is near to Circular Quay. There are a few hotels in that area but not a great numberwith kitchenettes. A little further up from the Quay are the pacific international suites. There have been other posters on this site whom have given it the thumbs up. it should be in your price range.

A BnB which has also been suggested and liked by quite a few has been Cremorne Point Inn. The only drawback is it is a across the harbour so requires ferry transport.

Another BnB is Wattle House..it's had some rave reviews. However it is in Glebe (10 mins by bus to the main tourist area)

check out the www.wotif sites as they link you to many hotel sites. their location maps are good. one downside is that booking is only a few weeks ahead as they try to fill up empty rooms in the hotels. if you can wait the deals can be quite good.

for your sydney stay check out (on the wotif site)the pacific international apartments in the haymarket part of sydney. it is near the chinatown area, close to the factory outlet shopping mall of marketcity, walking distance to darling harbour and further to the star city casino. you could walk all the way to the circular quay/opera house area from here - george street(where the apartments are located) is the main street in sydney and it is flat all the way to the quay.

these apartments are different from the suites mentioned by guruswife(i think)

happy planning.

Thanks for the responses thus far. Very helpful. Anyone have any knowledge about the Metro on Bank Place in Melbourne? The location seems terrific.

My favourites in central Melbourne are the Punt Hill appts off Little Bourke St. They have two bedroom appts within your budget and include kitchen and laundry facilities and couldn't be in a more central location .
