Meriton Suites - Mascot

Hi:

We have a cancellable booking with Meriton Suites in Mascot for 2 weeks beginning Jan 20/19. All the reviews seem excellent and it appears that the transport via metro is convenient and reasonably quick.

The cost seems like excellent value for an apartment style stay with a kitchen, which is what we are looking for.

We are prepared to do bus/train/metro travel to see lots of areas in Sydney.

Is this location reasonable?

Will we be able to commute to see the many sights of Sydney?

Any thoughts suggestions are really appreciated.!

Thanks & Cheers

Staying for 2 weeks in Mascot is a poor idea period.

I understand the cost aspect, but if you detail your exact travel dates and budget, I’m sure the locals will come up with some alternatives

Mascot is an industrial suburb with the two busiest airports in Australia.

Meriton Suites is about equidistant & less than 2kms from each of them.

Would you stay in that location in your home city? For a fortnight?

Accomodation in Mascot exists mostly for people with late arrivals & early departures.

did the reviews here on TA not help you with some answers?

note that with the Opal card, there is a daily cap of $15.80 and a weeky cap of $63.20

the property is probably nice... and its close to the airport...

but if your staying to do sightseeing in sydney, its low on my list of close to the city suburbs..

whats your budget.... im sure some of the experts on here will know something for that price in a better location.

Thanks for the feedback!

Yikes, didn't expect those comments, so glad I checked.

Did read all of the TA reviews of the place and by far most of them rave about it.....also knew about the Opal card and thought the $63 weekly cap seemed pretty reasonable, for unlimited travel in the wide city area.

We are committed to arrive Jan 20, and would like to have an extended stay as this is one leg of 70 day journey including NZ and OZ. We were also planning to visit Adelaide, Melbourne and travel the GOR for 3-7 nights (still working on that).

The cost for a 2 bed suite with full kitchen was $2400 AUD for the 14 nights. (don't need 2 BR''s, just twin beds)

We are 2 senior, active, retired Canadians who travel extensively, and do a lot of public transport and walking, wherever we are.....biking when available.

AUD$2400 for 14 nights... wow, tough to beat.

Two beds is the easy part (assuming it’s two beds rather than two bedroom as mentioned by Steve. But Meritons often use zipper Kings which can be split if needed)

Two beds in an apartment less than or close to AUD$2400 is going to be hard on those dates.

I typically dislike pushing travellers to go beyond their budget, but would like to ask something. Is that budget firm? And if not, how much more would you consider increasing if the convenience of being in a better location is substantial?

The only place that comes close at present is Oaks Hyde Park, but the options could increase if willing to fiddle with the budget

I think people are probably raving about them (1) because they only stayed a night & they are convenient for that.

More / just as likely .... because Meriton was blocking negative reviews on TA. And has been fined for it in the last week or so.

Thought: January is long school & summer holidays here. Although you’re coming towards the end of both, you might pick up a good deal around the CBD, as business travellers don't tend to be on the go until after Australia Day (Jan 26 - a great day to be in Sydney & on or near the harbour).

Have a look at Airbnb ... you could pick up a bargain.

Other suburbs that would work include

Potts Point, Surry Hills, Chippendale, Pyrmont, Newtown, Ultimo, Balmain, Kirribilli, Millers Point

Basically, anything within a 5-7 km radius of Circular Quay

It's a bit over what you’d be paying at Mascot, but friends really like the Harbourside at McMahons Point, for the location, ferries, lovely village atmosphere & eateries.

Haha yes indeed Bokhara 😂

Absolutely no free pass for Meriton, but truth be told, ‘diverting’ is not new, and it’s an industry wide practice - Meriton were just silly enough to issue executive directives by email, and instead of being discreet about filtering false/unsubstantiated complaints, they did so en masse, to improve ratings. Rookie mistake
