Safe beaches for swimming

We will be touring Sri Lanka next February and would like to end up for a few days on the beach before heading back to Colombo and home. I see that some beaches are described as not safe for swimming. Can anyone suggest which beaches are safer, as we enjoy swimming in the warm waters of the Ocean. Thanks in advance for your help.

All of SW coast, also those without reefs like Bentota or Tangalle, should be safe then. See here

Thank you. I'm wary after breaking my foot swimming of the Malabar coast in Kerala. The currents were deceptively strong.
