Trenitalia from Taormina to Salerno

I notice there is an option to purchase a train ticket from Taormina to Salerno. How does the train go from Messina to Calabria? Do we depart the train and get on a ferry? Is there a tunnel/bridge between the two points? Thank you for your help!

They load the all train on a ferry. When it's done, you are allowed to exit the compartment and stay on the upper decks,

There is no food service on the train, so many use the crossing as a time to purchase food on the ferry, or use the ferry's facilities.

It's a remarkable experience. The loading time takes longer than the crossing. The crossing takes less than a half-hour and the views from the sea are great. Don't leave your valuables unattended when you go upstairs on the ferry.
