Hoi An to Hue - what are the must-sees along the way?

We will be travelling in Vietnam in September and are going to hire a driver to take us from Hoi An to Hue. I have read that the trip takes around 2 hours without stopping, however I am looking for recommendations as to where we should/could stop along the way. We are quite happy to take all day to get there.

Thanks in advance!

While it didn't do much for me, check out Marble Mountain.

The Lady Buddha on Son Tra Peninsula is worth a look.

Stopping for lunch at Lang Co is also something worth doing.

As well as several stops to check out the views as you drive over the Hai Van Pass.

He's what we did in that area last year.

In addition to Scott's places...Many tours stop at the Cham Museum where many artefacts from My Son are on display. The Linh Ung pagoda with the colossal statue is usually an add-on with additional cost. Elephant Springs, Suoi Voi, might be offered as an alternative stop in place of the museum. Otherwise, you may pay to add. You can get off the highway from Phu Loc and go along the coast to see An Bang, aka the City of Ghosts/Tombs where Vietnamese who went overseas after the war have built elaborate family tombs and in the village, family temples and residences. From there there are a few routes to Hue on either side of the lagoon. You'll need to negotiate with the driver and I wouldn't try to do all.

Some more options (including a few that rayza had mentioned):

The Chuon village is better in the early morning when the fishing boats come in.

The last couple of items were just to have a drive along the river road Le Loi before going back to the hotel.

Many thanks John - I like the idea of seeing the fishing boats in the morning, and the monastery also looks interesting.

One slight problem with the fishing boats is that they come in at first light, or shortly after.

Another option is the Man Thai fishing village along the Da Nang coast, just before reaching the Son Tra peninsula.

You will see basket boats here along with the regular fishing boats.

You can see the white statue of the lady Buddha up on the Son Tra mountain from here.

Is it feasible to build in a side trip to the Golden Bridge? I've read that you have to go via a theme park to get there but it may just be too much to include.....

You're right.

That would be too much, not to mention the cost of entry.

Get a car and do Hue-Lang Co Lagoon-Pass of the clouds (specify that you want to go up the pass, not through the tunnel)-Danang Cham Museum-Marble Mountain-Hoi An. That's a superb day !
