One day walk - Beara or Kerry Way

Hi All,

We wanted to do one of the week walks on the Beara or Kerry way, but unfortunately it isn't going to work. We were hoping to walk just one day on each, and I am looking for the following information:

1) Is it possible to park your car at the start of a trail, walk it to a town, and take a bus back? (It would have to be under 35km walking)

2) What is the best section on each trail to walk for just a one day trip, to get a sense of the trail?

3) Are there places to leave a car for the day to do a section of the walk?

We will be based in Kenmare for 2-3 nights and will have a car to get to a starting point.

Thanks!

"1) Is it possible to park your car at the start of a trail, walk it to a town, and take a bus back? (It would have to be under 35km walking)" not so easy, bus service in rural areas can be very hit and miss.

You could walk the Old Kenmare Road from Kenmare to Killarney (or vice versa) and get a bus back.

In case you decide to hike the Beara Way, make sure you don't miss the ride with the legendary cable car to Dursey Island. There's a parking lot where you can leave your car:

This might be of interest to you, it's just outside Kenmare and you can safely park your car and do any one of the loop circuits, there is a fee however..... http://gleninchaquinpark.com/

The other suggestions are excellent. The old Killarney/ Kenmare road is a beautiful walk and you might be able to leave the car at your b&b and set off from there. Most b&b owners and very obliging and many will drop you to your start point.

Dursey Island is also a great suggestion and will certainly be off the beaten track and quieter than the Killarney-Kenmare road. There is a good book available " The Beara & Sheeps head's Peninsula- A walking guide " by Adrian Hendroff which gives plenty of good loop walks detailing parking, distances, times and map coordinates.

Enjoy.

Thanks everyone, this is really helpful!

The old Kenmare road is interesting, as we wouldn't have to drive much! Dursey is something we knew about (from researching the week long walks) and is definitely on our list.

Thanks again.
