Skipton, Burnsall or Grassington for pre-Xmas break?

Hi, we're looking for charming rustic inn surrounded by dramatic Dales scenery for walking/strolling in the week before Christmas. Coming by train from Leeds. Appletreewick looks fab but v limited buses and no village as such, so bit isolated? Burnsall and Grassington look great: which is best for stunning scenery, local atmospshere/little shops & cafes, hilly riverside walking and plenty of farm animals?! Or is winter bus access not much better?

Have scoured various options and hard to choose so looking for personal recommendations now! Also looked at Heriotts by the canal in Skipton - is the immediate scenery on a par with the above villages?

Thanks!

Grassington is much bigger and has far more 'bustle' than Appletreewick and Burnsall with a FAR better range of shops, cafes etc.

There are excellent walks in all directions from all 3 places.

I live in the Dales and can't imagine being here without a car so I'm afraid I can't help with buses apart from saying that bus services around here are forever being cut.

Meant to add - you seem to be concentrating on Wharfedale but you could take the train to Thirsk which is very close to Lower Wensleydale. You could then think about staying at small, pretty Dales towns in the area like Masham, Middleham or Leyburn.

Definitely Grassington. Burnsall is very pleasant but Grassington has more of the things you wish to experience.

Without a motorcar I would opt to stay in Skipton. From there you can catch buses to other places.

You could be a little isolated without a vehicle in the villages.

have a look at the canal side Rendezvous Hotel on the outskirts of Skipton ---- always good value.

Skipton would be too big for you I think. Its quite a large town. I would plump for Grassington.

Grassington is very nice but remember this stay is in the middle of winter so may be a little quiet and remote.

Thanks everyone. Grassington looks great and from what I can gather, there's a bus every two hours (which takes half an hour) between Grassington and Skipton - either the 72 or the 72R.

If anyone knows different and still thinks we'd be too isolated, please say! We definitely want to go to Stanforths etc. and feel a pre-Christmas vibe, but scenery and charm v important too, as it's long way to travel from London (via Leeds) so want it to be really special!

I suggest you stay in Skipton, yes it's bigger but it's a lovely town, with a great street market most days of the week.

You can then make the very scenic railway journey to Appleby,a very pretty small town.

Perhaps stop off in Settle on the return.

The scenery is about as unlike London as you can find in England.

Hi,

we live close to Skipton mainly (!) and also know the Ribble Valley.

We understand the lack of public transport on rural routes.

Nevertheless there are some excellent services.

The local roads and lanes are busy with sat-nav lorries, caravans or just cars in the National Park, Forest of Bowland and all their connecting routes whether via A1, A65 or A59.

We suggest that you consider staying in Skipton and then make use of excellent rail/bus/coach local transport.

Even a taxi into adjacent Dales will be reasonably priced from the town compared with your being booked in an isolated village inn catering for car owners.

Back to basic research.

or even look nearby with similar beautiful terrain

variable prices according to your car-less budget.

My thoughts exactly.

Skipton is a lovely town with it`s castle and delightful canal area .

Also Bizzie Lizzie `s fish and chip shop is well worth a visit !
