Locarno is certainly affordable for a day trip: via michelin
gives an hour and 15 minutes travel time (of course in the absence of traffic jam).
(open the four pdf files).
Instead I would use the car for other destinations, like the nearby, equally pleasant, Lake Orta (about 50 minutes to Orta San Giulio) or that of Macugnaga at the foot of Monte Rosa (4634 m.), with the possibility of several easy walks up ahead of the big glacier (about 1 ½ hours by motorway, I rely again on http://www.viamichelin.com).
Here are some websites on the two cities or regions:

Hi Brun066, thank you so much! This is great information and the sites you gave us are very helpful. Thanks.
There will be the San Bernardo fair in Macugnaga between the5th and 7th July. The town has the Mountain & Alpine Museum, the original "Smuggling" Museum, the typical Casa Walser in locality Borca and the 1.5 km itinerary within the Guja Mine (gold) Museum in the locality Fornarelli.
Thanks mate, we'll be there in oct so we'll miss the fair but the alpine museum and the gold mine sound great. Any places for food that you recommend? We love italian food and would like to taste some real italian food while there.
Tx in advance!
If you're going to Macugnaga, head to Hotel Restaurant Cristallo, the restaurant closes Monday and Tuesday but ring them before because they might closed in October too. If you'll drive north to Masera (44 km from Verbania) to see the Toce waterfall, don't miss Osteria del Divin Porcello, closed on monday.
See TA reviews.
Thanks again! We'll go try to go there.
No worries Vishal; have a good trip and take a jumper with you.
Hey guys - sorry for the late reply but we had a great time in Verbania. In fact, we believe it was our best holiday ever! The people are so friendly and helpful, the views are awesome and the food!
Thanks for the tips - we had a great time, can't wait to go back again!!!
Hi. We are going to verbania for aweek in few weeks. Could you share some of your experience with us? Thanks
I, too, am going in October to Verbania and surrounding area and would love to hear some specifics about your trip. That would be appreciated. Thanks.
