Are the roads accessible from Reykjavik to Olafsfjord in Feb

As a family of four we are considering driving from Reykjavik to Olafsfjord in February 2015. Is this a sensible idea due to the road conditions at that time of year? Do we definitely need a 4x4? Our main aim in visiting Iceland is to see the northern lights. Many thanks

The only anwer available is >>> Sometimes, sometimes not. The http://www.vegagerdin.is/english provides interactive online information on road conditions. Once you want to go there, read the weather forecast check the sites' map on road condition and plan accordingly.

It will probably be Ok. All these roads are major highways, and cleared if needed. But severe snow storms might render them impassable for few days max, every now and then.

I second Unnar´s answer, keep an eye on the forecast and road condition. No need to book accommodation in Ólafsfjörður area far ahead. The day before is enough.
