Trolltunga hike - please read

There are lots of questions about Trolltunga hiking season. Please read before you ask a question:

Because of remaining snow the hike can only be done from late June.

Because of short daylight and Winter conditions at high altitudes the hike should in no case be attempted after October 15th. Even before October there can be snow and frost on the trail, after September 15th hike with a guide.

Wind and rain can make the hike cold even in summer. Be prepared to do another, less demanding hike instead. Rule # 8: Don’t be ashamed to turn around.

In Norway, signs and warnings are used sparingly and understatements are common. If you see a sign, there is a very good reason.

This Winter was unusually warm in the lowlands and there was no snow downtown Oslo. But in the western and Northern Mountains there is very deep snow:

Darkest blue is more than 4 meters, dark blue is 2 to 4 meters. Around Trolltunga there can be several meters at the moment

In some western Mountains record deep snow

I agree, we found this bloggers tips really useful when we were planning our hike. She also detailed how not to take this hike for granted and answered a lot of questions we had. She really helped us.

Also keep in mind that there are many alternative and highly rewarding hikes in case there is too much snow or you are not prepared for a long hike.

If you park at P3 you do the first 400 meters elevation gain. P3 is at about 800 meters then you have to hike to almost 1300 meters at the highest. The total hike is about 8-9 hours until you are back at P3. So still not an easy hike. Note that driving up and down to P3 permitted only at certain hours.

You can hike during rain. Just keep in mind that even during summer at this altitude can be quite cool and windy, even during summer temperatures close to 0C is common. 5 degrees plus rain and windy is seriously cold.

If in doubt, do some other hike like Pulpit rock.
