King's Day Logistics

We're long since booked (and fully paid) on a week-long river cruise from Amsterdam in April. Unfortunately we chose the April 27 sailing, having failed until recently to realize that's King's Day. We will arrive in Amsterdam several days earlier, staying at a hotel on the Singel. Our logistical problem is how to get our luggage to the pier at De Ruijterkade on embarkation day when no surface transport whatsoever will be available in the Centrum. (Unfortunately, we're not as young as we used to be, and walking more than a minimal distance with substantial luggage is not an option for us, especially through crowds.)

The best plan we've so far come up with is this: On the morning of the 27th, check out of the hotel and leave the luggage for later pick-up; walk to the Hortus Botanicus, admire the pretty plants, and have lunch at their Café; walk to the Waterlooplein Metro, take Metro to Centraal Station, walk to the pier at De Ruijterkade, check in, and then after dinner take a taxi back to the hotel and pick up the luggage. (Fortunately the ship doesn't actually sail until the next morning.)

Can anyone suggest a better, or even a different, plan? Cecile74, if you're listening, this especially means you.

Your plan sounds pretty good to be honest. Only issue could be some difficulty getting a cab in the evening as they are usually pretty busy. What time does the ship sail the next day?

if your hotel agrees to store your luggage then your plan sounds doable.

you could make your way back to hotel. arrange a taxi and they can transport

you and the bags to the port. or get a taxi at centraal station to hotel, grab bags,

hop in same cab to the port.

Sounds like a feasible plan.

But no King's Day for you then? Or do you think you will see enough of it on your way over to Hortus Botanicus?

Where is your hotel actually located and what time can you check-in to the ship?

@Cecile74: I have a strong premonition we'll see more than enough King's Day en route to the Botanical Garden. We no longer are street-party types, if we ever were, and the Garden apparently is just about the only thing that will be open inside the Canal rings.

@Ronaldo and Lenny: Our hotel is on the Singel near Wolvenstraat. Ship check-in can be anytime on the 27th, but we'd like to board and get settled before dinner (on board, if only because we're already paying through the nose for that dinner). Hopefully the ship can call for a taxi to come to the pier. It's unclear what time the ship actually sails the next day, because the voyage begins by cruising the canals for a couple of hours before actually leaving the city. (And we'd need the luggage for overnighting on the ship anyway, if that's what you were thinking.)

Hearing no objection to our proposed plan, I guess that's what we'll do.

I very much doubt your ship will be cruising the canals. There is a very small height limit on most bridges which is why the usual canal boats are made specially to go under them.

@Ronaldo: Of course you're absolutely right, as I should have realized from the start. The "detailed itinerary" that arrived today shows that the "canal cruise" that begins the voyage is just an off-ship "excursion" on local canal tour boats, not on the main vessel.
