I want to visit some nearby cities while staying in Amsterdam. No more than a 3 hour train ride away. Would spend two days/one night.
Good for you. Go for it!!
Other options: Antwerp and Brussels - also belgian cities and about 3 hours by train from Amsterdam. Cologne and Dusseldorf in Germany are both just over 2 hours by train. Paris is 3,5h high speed train ride away.
You can consider Haarlem, Utrecht, Leiden, Enkhuizen, Naarden, Rotterdam (modern), Amersfoort, Zwolle and Kampen, Den Bosch, Breda, Dordrecht and tonnes of others. Just google image them and look up some info to see which ones you might like.
You can visit any city in Holland in less than 3 hours by train :-) I recommend you to visit The Hague. It's the government city and has beautiful monuments, historic neighbourhoods and interesting museums. When the weather is good you can also visit the beach of The Hague.
From Amsterdam Central it's only 45 minutes by train.
Thank you so much. Very helpful. Bruges & Cologne were the two I was thinking about visiting.
But if you want less travel time and more 'playtime' actually being in cities that are just as nice, stay in the Netherlands and follow the advice for Dutch cities listed (except Maastricht which is just as much travel time as Cologne). www.ns.nl/enEdited: 09 February 2015, 23:30
