What did I see?

How angry did they sky look today? I thought it would bucket down with rain but there was nothing more than a sprinkle!

Anyway, I came across several of these attached to trees. What are they? http://imgur.com/Q13gctn

Also, what is this? It looks like a post box of sorts but I saw no slot for mail to be inserted and there was no front door nearby for me to think it belonged to someone's home. See http://imgur.com/x2KcvD8

Thanks, Mez

The first one is a next box or bird house:

They are very common in Europe, I'm surprised they are apparently not popular in Australia.

Not sure about the second one. Are you sure the flap at the top couldn't be opened to let mail in?

Second one is a posy box. The vertical part just under the roof is the slot, you can lift it.

The part below that with the lock, is the door to open it to get your mail.

A quick Google image search of "cast iron mail box" brings up a lot of images of the same or similar mail boxes. Apparently it is sold all over Europe, and probable made in China...

I'm curious: what did YOU think the first thing was? :-)

I've never seen the bird boxes in Australia. I think we just leave them to fend for themselves.

As for what I thought, I did think they were for birds but then I couldn't figure out how a bird would get inside such a small hole. After reading the responses here I did find out the birds prefer the small entry and can get in/out. In my mind I was thinking of the birds at home I see daily which are much larger and would struggle to get inside.

Yes, these birdhouses are used by bird lovers to observe a certain type of bird in front of their house. The diameter of the hole is purposely drilled for the type of bird(s) you want to see nest in there. If the house is build for let's say Sparrows than the hole needs to prevent bigger predatory birds from entering.
