Amsterdam and Floriade

We're thinking of driving to Amsterdam from the Rotterdam ferry, couple of days sightseeing in AMS and then driving down to Venlo for a couple of days to take in Floriade.

Could do with some suggestions of hotels. We like small traditional hotels that give a taste of the country, preferably close to the centre in AMS, but with parking close by for the car. Tough call I know! Mid range price both in AMS and Venlo area. Help!

Forget about affordable parking closeby hotels in Amsterdam. Either the hotel has a parking lot, but then a) it's one of the few 4-5 stars at least and b) even then often it's not free; or your parking in a nearby parking garage or street costs you 30-40 euro/day. Use P + R (see top questions), only about 6 euro/day including free public transport to/from the hotel.

Mid range can have a different meaning to each individual. If you can please give us an exact price range, when you'll be visiting, what type of room and any amenities you would like. As Erik has mentioned, parking is expensive in the city center and P+R is your best option.

How close or far do you want to be from the centrum? Do you want to see a pasture or at least close enough to use public transit?

Peace

Small hotel in Amsterdam... check...

Small traditional hotel in Amsterdam... Uhm...

Small traditional hotel in Amsterdam not far from the center... UHM...

I'm not sure there is even a 'traditional' hotel in Amsterdam.

What do you mean by traditional?

And like Erik & Balou, I would strongly advice you against parking in Amsterdam... It's not just very expensive, it's rocket high expensive.

Driving in Amsterdam is also to be avoided if possible. Very crowded and sometimes chaotic with all the bikes, trams, cars, pedestrians, buses...

There is the boat hotel. Website says they have free parking. You can always take the free boat to the boat stop behind Amstedam Centraal Station. Not sure if you're ok with the location.

In any case, you can check their website and see if it's something for you. And ask about the parking.

By Mid Range say €100-200 but I've no real grasp of prices in AMS so would be guided by others for a 'decent' hotel. We'd want to be in close proximity to most of the attractions say walking distance, but would probably buy an I-Amsterdam pass so public transport included in that.

If we used the P+R it would makes sense to have a hotel near to one of the stops in the centre. A small hotel fronting to a canal would also hit the spot.

The aim is a romantic weekend to celebrate a 'milestone' birthday!

Thanks for the advice so far

Almost any Amsterdam hotel, and all of the central ones, is close to public transport stops. You'll be amazed at the density of trams and buses and the odd underground...

Try staying in Abcoude. Lovely little village outside amsterdam, definately rural and also has a train station so you can be in town in 20 minutes

Maybe look at the Hotel Abcoude http://www.hotelabcoude.nl/en/home

Your post is a bit ambigious though. Do you want a rural hotle or one in the city? You can park cheaper in the city. For instance the car park by CS has pre=booked parking from €20 per 24 hours and there is the car hotel who will pick your car up and drop it back off to you for approx €30 per day.

Edit - sorry our posts crossed

Try the Toren or the Estherea hotel or Chic & Basic. If you need to get an idea of hotel prices then check our dates on Booking.com

You can also easily get a 5 star in the centre for that budget by bidding for a hotel on NYOP on Priceline. Recent wins are for the NH Barbizon by the station and also the Grand Amrath.
