Netherlands itinerary - ideas?

I am going to the Netherlands in May for 3 days. I want to visit either The Hague, Rotterdam, Amsterdam and/ or Germany. I have a few small itineraries:

Arrive in Rotterdam, train to Hague early afternoon and stay for one night.

Train back to Rotterdam, book in hotel and then train to Amsterdam for the afternoon, Return to Rotterdam.

The next morning and afternoon in Rotterdam.

Or:

Two nights in Rotterdam and spend the same time in the above places: Rotterdam for afternoon on day of arrival. Hague, Amsterdam the next whole day. Rotterdam on the last morning.

Or:

Stay in Rotterdam for both nights, stay in Rotterdam first afternoon and explore; use the whole day for a trip to Dusseldorf via Utrecht station. Amsterdam early on the last day. Then back to Rotterdam and home.

If you could let me know which would be best, it'd be greatly appreciated

Unless visiting Dusseldorf for a few hours gets you something very tangible; maybe 3-days between Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague are already too few.

Logistically you would like to stay at Rotterdam and make day trips to Amsterdam and The Hague is fine but you do not need to change hotels during your short stay. Adds to time consumed away from experiencing a city unnecessarily.

Just book one hotel for entire trip and make day trips to max 2 cities if you have to.

Yeah that's what I was thinking, just basing myself in Rotterdam. Nicely priced hotels there.

I went to Amsterdam for a week around 7 years ago. I stopped in Rotterdam too for a short while. Hence why I am not too fussed about short visits - Germany I have never been to before. I would get around 6-8 hours in Germany depending on which train I can get, £45 return.

If you have been to Rotterdam and Amsterdam earlier - stay at Utrecht this time and then the trip to Germany would also be a bit shorter. You could also explore places between Utrecht and Cologne (in my opinion slightly better than Dusseldorf) such as Arnhem, Nijmegen, Utrechtse Heuvelrug area etc.

I agree with post #3 unless you want to see more of Rotterdam which has had a few really nice additions over the recent years, such as the Markthal tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g188632-d7… and Fenix Food Factory tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g188632-d6… .

With regards to The Hague: it has some good museums but other than that it's not the most charming of Dutch cities.

With only 3 days, personally I would not want to spend 5 hours on trains to/from Germany (+ the time needed to get to the stations). But if there is something you really want to see in Dusseldorf then I guess a 'crazy' trip like that might be worth it.

Thanks for the replies people. Out of the 3 itineraries which would be best? Or the best city to stay in besides Amsterdam? (Quite expensive!)

I've seen that it is a nice city! I think I'd like Rotterdam, but it isn't typically Dutch. I like old buildings as much as I like skyscrapers and modernity...

Stay in Rotterdam and take your day trips from there, but skip Germany for another trip. The Hague is ok, but there's more to it than meets the eye. You just have to look around for it. One place I'd recommend you to visit in The Hague is the Prison Gates Museum (Gevangenpoortmuseum). It gives a good history of The Hague and Parliament.

As for Rotterdam, do not only limit yourself to the Markthal, which is not too bad, but go on the Spido to see the harbour area, go to the Euromast for a view of the city and try visiting one of the cube houses (Kubuswoningen) just for fun. Perhaps get yourself a meal on the Pancake Boat (Pannenkoekenboot) just for a laugh, if your wallet can manage it.

Hope you have a great time out here!
