Best route from Grindelwald to Lauterbrunnen and Schilthorn?

What is the best route leaving from Grindelwald to visit Schilthorn and Lauterbrunnen, and then back to Grindelwald? Is it best to first stop at Schilthorn, or first stop at Lauterbrunnen? How would we get back to Grindelwald?

Jan865,

Take a look at this link:

alpineskimaps.com/swit/jungfrau/mapsum.htm

It is a map of the area with transportation options. "Best" will be determined by what your priorities are. The cheapest & fastest option is to take the train from Grinderwald to Zweilutschinen to Lauterbrunnen. The costlier more scenic option is the train up to Kleine Scheidegg down to Wengen down to Lauterbrunnen. If you look at the map you'll see that you have two options to get to Murren, you're gateway to the Schilthorn.

You can see it better in this map:

I would recommend to cross the street from the Lauterbrunnen train station to the lift that takes you up to Grutschalp in 5 min then the train that takes you to Murren. You will have a nice 5 to 10 minute walk thru the village where you can hop on the lift up to the Schilthorn. On your way down stay on the lift and continue down to Gimmewald and finally to the valley at Stechelberg. When the lift leaves Gimmelwald you will have this view: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RMTVNfSDKk

This would be a great time to walk down the valley back to Lauterbrunnen and maybe stop at Trummelbach falls on your way. To get back to Grindelwald just retrace your steps once in Lauterbrunnen. If your hungry by then I would highly recommend the Hotel Oberland restaurant in Lauterbrunnen or pizzeria Da Sina in Wengen.

Enjoy, it is a truly amazing place.

Wow---this is extremely helpful information! The maps help me to visualize the routes. The youtube clip is great! I'm wondering---how long is the walk from Stechelberg back down to Lauterbrunnen? (maybe stopping at Trummelbach Falls). Our family is not exactly used to hiking, and I'm wondering if this is a good idea for us.

Even though it's costlier, we'd most likely take the more scenic option of the train up to Kleine Scheidegg, down to Wengen, down to Lauterbrunnen. This is our first time there, and we're wanting to see as much as we can. We're not into the big hikes, and are mostly interested in seeing some amazing sights for the first time.

You have the option of taking the bus down the valley when you arrive at Stechelberg. The bus stops beside the cable car station. .It will make a stop at Trummelbach falls down the valley.Once you have seen the falls, just wait on the next bus for Lauterbrunnen if your family don't feel like walking.
