Wengen to Grindelwald

We are visiting in mid June (2018). We're traveling by car from Interlakken and plan to park at Lauterbrunnen and take the train to our hotel in Wengen.

We'd like to visit Grindelwald to do the toboggan ride in Pfingstegg, and possibly some of the activities at Grindelwald-First (e.g., Bort Alpine Playground, Cliff walk, Trottibike).

What is the best (easiest/most affordable) way to reach these areas?

Drive to Grindelwald (before checking in to hotel)? Get to Wengen then take cable cars?

Taking the cable cars is much more exciting and that's what I'd do but it will cost you the fare, car will be cheaper. If you do the maths remember to take parking fees into account.

One of the reasons tourists go to the Bernese Oberland is to ride the public transport and see the views. IMHO you'll miss out by using the car.

It's your choice. Enjoy.

A very scenic way to do it would be to take the cable car from Wengen to Mannlichen (wonderful views), then take go down the other side on the cable car from Mannlichen to Grindelwald (Grund). A short walk gets you into Grindelwald village. The cable car to First leaves from right in the village.

We were there in January this year. We drove to our hotel at Grindelwald, and the car did not move again until we drove to Zurich airport 5 days later! The network of cable cars and trains in the area is excellent and so much fun.

And the cheapest way will be by train to lauterbrunnen, then to zweilutschinen, then Grindelwald. It’s all in valleys though, so maybe get there over the mountain and come back this way.

Lots of good suggestions here already, but for completeness the other option is train from Wengen up to Kleine Sheidegg which is below the Eiger and a nice pit stop, then train down beside the Eiger and down into Grindlewald. Then you’d need to get over to the gondola that takes you up the mountain at Grindlewald if that’s where you want to head. Great toboganging also from a Kleine Scheidegg down to Brandegg if that’s of interest. As someone else has said, the other option is the cable car straight up from Wengen, then a smaller cable car down the other side to Grindlewald. Both great options and no way you’d want to drive to Grindlewald, getting the train or gondolas are an experience not to missed in this amazing setting, summer or winter.
