Itinerary for 9 days/8 nights trip

I am planning a trip with my son next March (2019) and have come up with this itinerary and needed your expert advise.

Arrive in to Zurich.

Zurich to Lucerne (2 nights) to see city sights and 1 mountain excursion

Lucerne to Interlaken ( 2 nights) most likely to stay in Spiez. Lake Thun excursion and 1 mountain trip.

Spiez to Zermatt via Brig (by Lotscberger through Kandersteg) (2 nights).

My questions are:

1. I am flying out from Geneva. I like to take the Golden Pass again. Is it better to go from Zermatt to Montreux and then take the Golden pass to Zweisimmen or from Zermatt back to Visp and then to Zweisimmen then the Golden pass to Montreux.

2. I have 2 nights unplanned and can extend at either of the places depending on the weather but also thinking if there's any other excursion near Montreux that we could explore.

Thanks.

Hi Derric S

I would add one of your nights at Lucerne which is 1 train hour away form Zurich airport and more than 3 hours from Geneva airport. Arriving at one and departing from an other airport would be helpful. As you will arrive at Geneva I would do the trip the other way around

Geneva - Zermatt

Zermatt - Spiez via the goldenpass line

Spiez - Lucerne via Bruenig-Hasliberg (Northern leg of the goldenpass line)

Lucerne - Zurich airport

or vice versa.

I would add your supplementary nights at Lucerne and at Zermatt.

This way you would not do the Lötschberg railway which is less scenic than the goldenpass line but you would economize a lot of time.

Happy planning

Hi Pore,

Thanks for the reply.

I actually plan to arrive into Zurich and depart from Geneva.

So I will reverse the itinerary given.

Zurich airport - Lucerne (3 nights)

Lucerne - Spiez (2 nights) by Goldenpass

Spiez - Zermatt (3 nights) isn't this part of Glacier Express?

Zermatt - Geneva (via Visp and Zweisimmen so to take the Goldenpass again)

Thanks again.

You take the train from Spiez to Zweisimmen and from there the goldenpass line. Glacier Express is operating between Zermatt and St. Moritz which is a very different area.
